FAKE ALERT: “Ukraine will have to pay off a multibillion-dollar loan from the G7 on its own”

Description of the fake LIE

Ukrainians will have to pay back a €35 billion loan on their own, which the European Commission is going to provide at the expense of future profits from Russia’s frozen assets. This condition is prescribed in a separate clause of the loan agreement with the EU. This is spread by Russian media and Telegram channels.

Refutation TRUTH

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, did not say anything similar during her visit to Kyiv on September 20, where she publicly announced the loan.

Fact-checkers from Ukrinform have investigated this issue and found that there is no mention of “returning the loan by Ukrainians” either in the post of the EC president on the X social network or directly in the official message on the EC’s website.

In addition, none of the world or Ukrainian media reported on this clause of the agreement.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Finance added that Ukraine will not spend its own funds to repay the €35 billion loan from the European Unionrepayment will be made exclusively at the expense of future profits from Russia’s frozen assets in the EU.

The purpose of these Russian lies is to cause Ukrainians to mistrust their allies and partners in Europe, to sow doubts about the correctness of the country’s chosen path, and also to create a sense of hopelessness in Ukrainian society that, allegedly, Ukrainians will “live in poverty” for years because they will have to give back the credit assistance.
