FAKE ALERT: “Boris Johnson called on Ukraine to abandon its demands for the return of its 1991 borders”

Description of the fake LIE

Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson called on Ukraine to refuse the return of its 1991 borders. In addition, he proposed to grant rights to the Russian-speaking population as compensation for Russian President Putin. This is reported by propaganda Telegram channels referencing Johnson’s article for the Daily Mail.

Refutation TRUTH

In the Daily Mail column, Boris Johnson wrote:

“Putin would have to pull back at least to the pre-invasion boundaries of 2022, and to avoid future conflict and uncertainty the rest of Ukraine would have to be recognised as a free country, able to choose its destiny within the EU and NATO, and absolutely welcome to join as soon as possible.”

Therefore, there is no mention of the call to “refuse to return to the boundaries of 1991”. Russian propaganda twisted Johnson’s statement, turning him into a repeater of Kremlin narratives.

Johnson also wrote in his column that “special protection could be provided for Russian-speakers [in Ukraine].” However, this is also not a call, but only a theoretical assumption.

Moreover, Johnson’s column is his subjective opinion only. Propagandists are trying to exaggerate the importance of this publication, positioning it as a “programmatic document” made public by “Zelenskyy’s main Western partner.”
